Sahastra Bahu Temple, Nagda: A Timeless Marvel of Rajasthan
Nestled amidst the serene surroundings of the ancient town of Nagda, located around 23 kilometers from Udaipur in Rajasthan, lies the exquisite Sahastra Bahu Temple, commonly referred to as the Sas Bahu Temple. Historical Significance
The Sahastra Bahu Temple dates back to the 10th century AD and was built during the reign of the Kachchhapaghata dynasty, which ruled parts of present-day Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The term “Sahastra Bahu” literally translates to “one with a thousand arms,” a reference to Lord Vishnu, the primary deity of the temple. Over time, the name was colloquially shortened to “Sas Bahu”, leading to the popular misconception that the temples are dedicated to a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law duo.
The temple complex originally comprised two temples, both dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and stood as an important religious center in the region. Though partially in ruins today, the site continues to attract history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and spiritual seekers.
Architectural Grandeur
The Sahastra Bahu Temples are an exceptional example of Nagara-style architecture, which is typical of North Indian temple design. The larger temple, often referred to as the “Sas” temple, and the smaller “Bahu” temple, stand adjacent to each other and share a common platform. Though both temples have lost their spires (shikharas) over time, the surviving structures still exhibit breathtaking artistry.
Intricately carved pillars, panels, and toranas (arched gateways) adorn the temples. Scenes from Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, celestial beings, dancers, musicians, and floral motifs are exquisitely sculpted in stone. The sanctum, mandapa (pillared hall), and the entrance porches reflect a refined sense of proportion and ornamental detailing.
The inner sanctum once housed images of Vishnu in his various avatars. Though the idols are missing now, the decorative carvings and the atmospheric setting provide a powerful spiritual aura.

The temples are beautifully situated near Bagela Lake, adding a serene charm to the historical complex. The reflection of the ancient structures in the tranquil waters of the lake enhances their mystical appeal, making it a photographer’s delight.
Surrounded by Aravalli hills, the site is not only picturesque but also relatively peaceful compared to other crowded tourist spots in Rajasthan. The quiet ambiance makes it a perfect spot for contemplation and connection with history.
Cultural Legacy
Nagda was once an important city of Mewar, believed to have been established in the 6th century AD by Nagaditya, the fourth ruler of the Guhilot dynasty. The Sahastra Bahu Temples stood as prominent religious institutions during the height of Nagda’s prominence. Though invasions and natural wear have taken their toll, the remaining structures still speak volumes about the rich cultural and spiritual past of the region.
The site is under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which has undertaken efforts to preserve and maintain its remaining splendor.

- Timings: The temple complex is open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and entry is free.
- Getting There: Located 23 km from Udaipur, the site is easily accessible by taxi or private vehicle. It can also be combined with a visit to the Eklingji Temple, which is just 2 km away.
