Historical and Mythological Significance

Lord Shiva, in an attempt to avoid them, transformed into a bull and submerged himself in the ground, leaving behind his hump, which is worshipped at Kedarnath. Other parts of his body are revered in different temples known as the Panch Kedar.
Best Time to Visit
The Kedarnath Yatra season begins in late April or early May and continues until November, when the temple is closed for the winter. The best time to visit is during the summer months of May to June and September to October. During these periods, the weather is pleasant, and the region is accessible, making the trek safer and more enjoyable.
Journey to Kedarnath
Starting Point: Haridwar or Rishikesh
Most pilgrims begin their journey from Haridwar or Rishikesh, which are well-connected by rail and road. From here, one can travel by road to Gaurikund, the base camp for the Kedarnath trek.
Road Journey to Gaurikund
The drive to Gaurikund offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan landscape, passing through picturesque towns like Rudraprayag and Guptkashi. The journey takes approximately 8–9 hours by car or bus.
The Kedarnath Trek
From Gaurikund, the 16-kilometer trek to Kedarnath begins. Pilgrims can choose to walk, hire ponies, or opt for palanquins to reach the temple. Helicopter services are also available for those who prefer a quicker and more comfortable journey.
The trek route is dotted with scenic vistas, cascading waterfalls, and small tea stalls offering refreshments. The path, though steep and challenging, is spiritually rewarding, with the chants of “Har Har Mahadev” echoing throughout the journey.
Kedarnath Temple
Upon reaching Kedarnath, the sight of the ancient temple surrounded by snow-clad peaks is awe-inspiring. The temple, made of massive stone slabs, is a marvel of architecture and resilience, having withstood centuries of natural calamities, including the devastating floods of 2013.

1. Shankaracharya Samadhi
Located near the temple, this is the final resting place of Adi Shankaracharya, who is believed to have attained samadhi here after establishing the Char Dham Yatra.
2. Bhairavnath Temple
Situated 500 meters from the main temple, this shrine is dedicated to Bhairavnath, considered the protector of the Kedarnath Temple during the harsh winter months when it remains closed.
3. Gandhi Sarovar
A pristine lake located 4 kilometers from Kedarnath, it is a serene spot offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.
